Observing Evenings
During the darker evenings from September to April, the Society has access to a local site that is somewhat private and away from bright lights.
Each month we pick a Saturday when the Moon is out of the way so there is less natural light pollution. We also have a second date a back up in case the weather does not cooperate…..which is often the case!
Observing evenings are always an opportunity for members to get together outside of the monthly meetings and help each other with tips and practical help on using equipment. You don’t need to bring a telescope, some members will come to an observing evening for the chance to see different telescopes in operation and the owners are happy to share the views through their eyepiece.
Our regular observing evenings are for members and their friends and families, but these are closed sessions and arrangements are shared via emails to the membership.
Outreach
The Society also runs events for the local community. We hold observing evenings with local schools, Scouting and Guiding groups in the Farnham area. We usually lay on a presentation as a back up in the event that the sky is not clear. Many groups have also visited the Alexander Observatory in Aldershot.
If you would like to talk to us about running an event for a community organisation or school please send us a message via the Contact Us page.
We do run public events to observe eclipses or open the observatory to the public on heritage days or special occasions. In the past the Society was heavily involved with the BBC’s Stargazing Live, and we both ran our own events and supported much bigger events organised by the BBC themselves.
Details of public events will be published on our website or in the local press and media.
